ZILLS, Edward - son
of Nancy Zills, was born in Jackson County, Ohio September 15, 1841,
and settled in this county in 1872. He was married in Shelby
County, March 25, 1870, to Adaline Galloway, who was born in that
county March 25, 1851. Their son, Freddie, was born April 12,
1870, and his maternal grandparents are Henry and Sarah (Redman)
Galloway. Mr. Zills was a member of Company D., 27th Ohio
(colored), under Captain Bartlett; was in the battles of the
Wilderness, Seige of Petersburg and Richmond, Fort Fisher, North
Carolina; and was discharged September 21, 1865. George H.
Galloway, brother of Mrs. Galloway, was in the 27th Ohio (colored);
died of camp fever at Fredericksburg, Virginia, August 1864.
Edward Zills is a farmer. Address, Pleasant Point,
Paulding County, Ohio.
ZUBER, John B. - was among the earliest
settlers of this county, it taking them four days to come here from
Defiance, a distance of twenty-five miles, two and one-half miles of
the road having to be cut through the woods; the wolves and bears were
very plentiful, and hunting was one of the favorite pastimes. His birth
occurred in Switzerland, September 9, 1838, his parents being Joseph
and Elizabeth Zuber, who died May 19, 1856, and May 16, 1856,
respectively. His first marriage was to Julia A., daughter of Emanuel
and Adaline (Keener) Kauffman, which took place October 12, 1865. Her
children are: Emma Clara, born July 11, 1866; Adaline Elizabeth,
December 4, 1868. His wife’s death occurred June 19, 1870.
Her parents came to this county in 1857 from Pennsylvania, and her
father died in the army at Knoxville, Tennessee, October 3, 1863. Mr.
Zuber’s present wife is Mary E. Chaney, who was born in
Clermont county, Ohio, February 20, 1850. Their marriage was in Crane
township, June 25, 1872. They have the following children: John W.,
born May 2, 1873; Mary Rosella, January 17, 1875, died February 14,
1875; Eliza Pearl, January 20, 1877. Mr. Zuber was in the late war,
enlisting in Company G, 14th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, serving
three months and being in all the battles in which the regiment served;
he re-enlisted in August, 1862, in Company I, 100th Regiment Ohio
Volunteer Infantry, in which he served two years, when he was wounded
at Atlanta, Georgia, which kept him in hospital a year; before his
wound he never missed a battle in which the regiment was engaged. His
business is merchant and farming. Address, Antwerp, Paulding county,
