UNDERWOOD, Hiram - was one of the defenders of the Union in the war of the Rebellion, enlisting in the 96th Ohio, and was in eleven general engagements; he was taken prisoner at Grand Catan, Louisiana, and after being incarcerated six weeks made his escape and returned to his regiment. He had two brothers who were soldiers of 1861, Alonzo belonging to the 183d Ohio, and who served over three years: Aaron first joined the 23d Ohio, afterward the 45th Ohio, and finished his military career in the 1st United States Cavalry, serving in all about five years. Mr. Underwood was born in Logan county, Ohio, January 28, 1840, which county was also the birthplace of his wife, Rachel Haines, the date August 23, 1837. Their marriage took place in the same county, September 22, 1860. Their children are: David W., born July 21, 1861; Mary E., August 23, 1862; Louisa J., May 10, 1866; Sarah E., May 27, 1867; Elmer and Edwin, May 13, 1871; Ida M., February 16, 1875; Charles A., August 2, 1877; Emma, January 16, 1880, died same day. The parents of Mr. Underwood were David, who died November, 1858, and Mary A. (Downs) Underwood. His wife’s parents were David and Elizabeth A. (Branson) Haines; the latter died in 1862. Mr. Underwood has been Clerk two terms, Justice of the Peace three years, Assessor and Constable. His business is farming and blacksmithing. Address, Payne, Paulding county, Ohio.


UPP, Jesse - has a farm of 160 acres, 60 of which are cleared. When he settled here, the farm was in its natural state, not a stick of timer had been removed. HE was born in York county, Pennsylvania, January 3, 1820, and married in Butler county, Ohio, August 12, 1847, to Susan Borger, who was born in Bucks county, Pennsylvania, November 8, 1828. They have had eleven children as follows: Anna Mary, born July 28, 1848, died September 27, 1848; Sarah, April 27, 1850; Samuel, July 12, 1852, died in November, 1854; Charles, August 10, 1854, died in September, 1854; Eliza J., February 16, 1856; Clarissa, March 21, 1858; Maria A., September 7, 1860; Susannah S., April 19, 1863; Henrietta, November 2, 1865; Emma, March 3, 1869; Manda V., March 12, 1874. Mr. Upp’s parents were George and Lydia (Shrum) Upp, both of whom died in Iowa. His wife’s parents were Jacob and Anna Mary (Long) Borger, both deceased. Mr. Upp has been Trustee in Brown township four years. He is engaged in farming. Address, Defiance, Ohio.
