JACKSON, Benjamin B. -
born in
Harison county, West Virginia, February 26, 1821, is a son of William
Jackson, born March 16, 1777, in New Jersey, and Hannah (Bennett)
Jackson, born in Pendleton county, Virginia, in 1779; and migrated with
her husband to Warren county, Ohio, in 1828. They died in April, 1857
and 1855 respectively. Mr. Jackson was married in Clermont county,
Ohio, September 22, 1840, by Arthur McNeal, Esq., to Elizabeth J.
Champion, who was born in the same county, February 3, 1823, and they
settled in Paulding county in October, 1848. Their children are Andrew
C., born October 14, 1842; Martha C., October 3, 1844; Mary R., March
22, 1847, died April 2, 1847; Thomas C., August 23, 1848, died May 14,
1850; Stephen O., September 19, 1851; Sarah L., October 3, 1853; Chase
M., October 18, 1855, died December 3, 1855; William B., July 26, 1857;
Benjamin B., February 25, 1862; Ruby M., October 24, 1866, died
February 8, 1869. Mrs. Jackson's father was Robert S. Champion, born
December 19, 1799, in New Jersey, died in April 1847; her mother,
Electa (Schooley) Champion, born in New Jersey, April 6, 1798, died
December 10, 1828. Mr. Jackson has served as Justice of the Peace about
nine years; Clerk several terms; Decennial Land Appraiser in 1880;
Township Trustee one term, and Township Assessor two terms. He also
served in the late war, member of Company G, 14th Regiment Ohio
Volunteer Infantry, enlisted August 26, 1861, and participated in the
following battles: Wild Cat, Kentucky; Mill Springs, Kentucky;
Chickamauga, Mission Ridge; in the Atlanta campaign, including
Jonesboro, Sherman's march to the sea, etc. Was mustered out of service
July 16, 1865, at Cleveland, Ohio. His son Andrew enlisted and served
in the same company and regiment, and was mustered out of service at
the same time. The company was attached to the 3rd Division, 3rd
Brigade, of the 14th Army Corps. Mr. Jackson was one of the first early
settlers of Paulding county. Business, farming in Crane township.

JACKSON, Edward D. -
was
married August 2, 1849 to Catharine Borger, who was born in
Pennsylvania, August 26, 1831. Mr. Jackson was born in Virginia,
February 1, 1825. They had four children: Sarah J., born June 6, 1850;
J. H., May 23, 1853; Sylvestor F., August 1, 1860; Cora L. S., July 23,
1863. Mr. Jackson was engaged in farming at the time of his decease.
Mr. Jackson died, March 7, 1874. Mrs. Jackson's address is Charloe,
Paulding County, Ohio.
JACKSON, Thomas J. -
a
resident of Blue Creek township, where he settled in 1873, was born in
Carroll county, Ohio, May 6, 1837; is a son of John and Rebecca
(Stewart) Jackson. He was married in Gallia county, August 12, 1858, to
Elizabeth Dupre, born in Gallia county, December 1, 1833, daughter of
Abraham and Mary (DeMerric) Dupre, and their children are: John M.,
born May 17, 1859; Rebecca J., September 9, 1861; George W., September
12, 1863, died August 16, 1864; Juritta A. A., July 21, 1865; Emma
Luella, January 27, 1868; Rufus Dupre, December 15, 1872; Arthur
Hamilton, March 29, 1880. Thomas J. Jackson was Constable in this
township in 1879 and 1881; was President of the School Board during the
years of 1876 and 1877; held their first school meeting in the woods,
on a log, with only four persons to vote. Mr. Stewart, Thomas J.
Jackson’s grandfather, was in the war of 1812, under General
Harrison, and his father, John Jackson, was in the war of 1861; was
promoted to Wagon Master, and then Commissary Sergeant. Mr. Stewart was
killed at the battle of Fort Meigs, near Maumee. John Jackson died of
chronic diarrhea, March 14, 1864. Mr. Jackson is a farmer, and his
postoffice address is Paulding, Paulding county, Ohio.
JAILER, Peter -
is
of French descent, and after becoming of age changed his name to
Jailer, from Cheoalla which it originally was in the French language.
He is by trade a farmer, carpenter and joiner. He was born in
Plattsburg, Clinton county, New York, May 22, 1814. His father, John
Jailer, was born in Vermont, 1787, and died in Cleveland in 1858. His
mother, Adeline (DeMorce) Jailer, was born in Canada, 1792; removed to
Plattsburg, New York, when a child, and died in Berea, Ohio, 1870.
Peter was married in Cuyahoga county, Ohio, May 16, 1867, to Fanny F.
Moore, who was born in Michigan, July 13, 1845. Their children are:
Gertrude A., born March 16, 1868; Peter Ephraim, November 19, 1872,
died September 18, 1873; Charles Andrew, July 19, 1875; John William,
March 19, 1881. His wife’s parents were residents of
Michigan. Her father, William Henry Moore, was born in Ireland in 1810,
and died in 1875. Her mother, Gertrude Hook, was born in New Jersey in
1800, and died in Paulding county. Mr. Jailer is a resident of Carryall
township. Address, Paulding, Paulding county, Ohio.
JOHNSON, Thomas D. -
was
born in Montgomery county, Ohio, September 20, 1827, and came to this
county in 1859. He was married in Paulding county, Ohio, December 27,
1859, to Susan E. Hardesty, who was born in Carroll county, Ohio,
February 9, 1840. They have four children: Anna J., born June 6, 1864;
Sidney, September 12, 1866, died February 2, 1867; Ruby B., March 5,
1868; William H., December 1, 1870. Mr. Johnson’s parents are
Robert Johnson and Jane (Pugh) Johnson. His wife’s parents
are Adam Hardesty, died April 23, 1859, and Anna (Kimmel) Hardesty,
died March 5, 1873. They came to this county in 1853. Mr. And Mrs.
Johnson are both deceased; the former died April 21, 1880, the latter
September 28, 1881. The three remaining children are still living on
the homestead, and their postoffice address is McGill, Paulding county,
Ohio.
JONES, Thomas E. - son of Benjamin Jones, who
died in 1843, and Frances (Evans) Jones, who died January 24, 1871,
both natives of Ohio, and early settlers of Clinton county, was born in
that county July 17, 1840, and settled in Paulding county in 1854. His
wife, Martha A. (Maxwell) Jones, was born in Fayette county, Ohio, May
6, 1845, and was married in the same county September 11, 1866, by
Esquire Sears. She is a daughter of Campbell Maxwell and Henrietta
(Hale) Maxwell; the latter died January 24, 1873. Campbell Maxwell now
resides at Xenia, Ohio. Mr. Jones’ family consists of: John
B., born July 5, 1867; William F., September 22, 1868; Henrietta F.,
May 11, 1871; Daniel B., February 8, 1873; Mary F., January 29, 1875;
Margaret E., January 26, 1877; James O., September 11, 1879; Mandy J.,
August 29, 1881; all reside with their parents. Mr. Jones served in the
war of the Rebellion; enlisted at Delaware, Ohio, March, 1863, in the
27th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company E; participated in the
battles of Petersburg, Virginia; South Side Railroad, Virginia; Fort
Fisher, North Carolina; Wilmington, North Carolina, and skirmishes too
numerous to particularize; was sergeant of his company six months, and
was mustered out of service at the close of the war. His regiment was
attached to the 9th Division, 10th Army Corps. Mr. Jones had two
brothers in the service; both died while in line of duty of pneumonia.
