EATON, Hiram - a native of Oswego County,
New York, was a resident of Crane township at the time of his death. He
was born in Oswego county New York, August 28, 1827, and died March 26,
1876. His wife, Elizabeth J., to whom he was married on the farm now
occupied by her, is a daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth (Williams)
Simpson. Two children were added to and taken from them: Charley, born
September 21, 1857, died October 12, 1857, and Ida C., born March 3,
1859, died April 20, 1877. Mr. Eaton was a son of Nathan and Betsy
Eaton. Mrs. Eaton is a firm believer in the Christian religion.

EATON, William - born in Erie county, Pennsylvania, December 30, 1828, settled in Paulding county, October 29, 1854. He was married in Franklin county, Ohio, December 5, 1850, to Susan Ann Agler, whose parents are William and Mary (Chambers) Agler; the former died in Mercer county, Ohio; her mother lives in Van Wert, Van Wert county, Ohio. The children are: Mary M., born February 28, 1852; Willard E., September 29, 1853; Lydia Ann, October 11, 1855; Amanda L., October 22, 1857; William Henry, February 17, 1859; James Emery, December 8, 1860; Orin Lewis, October 2, 1862; George Morris, November 27, 1864; Martha Alzina, October 22, 1867; Laura Ellen, June 6, 1870. Mr. Eaton is a son of William and Martha (Chambers) Eaton, both of whom died in Franklin county, Ohio. Mr. Eaton has been Trustee of Latty township for eighteen years. His grandfather, Joseph Eaton, was a soldier in 1776, and his father was in the war of 1812, and he, William , was in the war of 1861. He also had a brother, James, in the late war. The subject of this sketch was one of the pioneers of Latty township, and he has worked hard to improve it. During the last year, August 16, 1881, he has had the misfortune of losing his beloved wife by sickness after she had suffered untold pain. She calmly awaited the coming of the dread messenger to take her out of this world of sorrow. She was a member of the M. E. Church, as is also her husband. Mr. Eaton is a granger, and his postoffice address is Gilbert’s Mills, Paulding county, Ohio.
EDWARDS, William Hyatt - was born in Helena, Arkansas in 1842; came to this county in 1881. Occupation, bricklayer and saloon keeper. Mr. Edwards was married at Dayton, Kentucky, to Lucy Bond Allingham, born at Lancaster, Ohio 1850, on the 12th of August 1867. their children are: James W., born November 25, 1868; Anna, born June 17, 1870; William R., August 24, 1872; Daisy, August 15, 1874; Nina C., May 14, 1880. Mr. Edwards was a member of Company G, 16th Regiment Michigan Veteran Volunteer Infantry, Fifth Army Corps, Army of the Potomac. Mr. Edwards’ parents are Charles Hamilton Edwards and Caroline (Hyatt) Edwards. His wife’s parents are Richard Allingham and his wife Anna. Mr. Edwards is also a contractor. His post office address is Paulding, Paulding county, Ohio.
ELLSWORTH, Augustine - became a resident of Paulding county in 1866; was born in Wyoming county, Pennsylvania, August 19, 1822. His father, Avery Ellsworth, was born April 30, 1797, and died October 16, 1851. His mother, Susan (Fitch) Ellsworth, was born October 30, 1798, and died September 16, 1857. Hannah Hollock, born in Orange county, New York, February 8, 1828, is the daughter of Ira Hollock, born in the same county September 28, 1797, and died October 27, 1872, and Judy (Wells) Hollock, born in the same county and state, same month and day, 1800, died November 22, 1867. Hannah and Augustine were married in Pennsylvania, October 17, 1850, and their children are: Arminda Jane (Cole) born September 22, 1851; Avery H., June 4, 1858; Clinton B., February 7, 1855, died August 11, 1880; James B., November 27, 1856, died August 17, 1866; Julie E., October 30, 1858. Mr. Ellsworth has never been married but once, but has raised three families besides his own. After his father’s death, he had the car of his mother and three brothers and sisters; his wife’s brother was killed in Missouri, leaving three orphans to his care and support, and his son Clinton died, leaving two children, who are still living with him. Mr. Ellsworth is proprietor of the Exchange House in Antwerp, Paulding county, and has a good livery in connection with it. Address, Antwerp, Paulding county, Ohio.
ELY, Noah - son of Michael and Catherine (Hewit) Ely, was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, May 30, 1821, and on October 20, 1847, was married in Knox county, Pennsylvania, to Julia Ann Lybarger, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Carpenter) Lybarger; settled in this county, October 20, 1848. This marriage has resulted in the following family: Matilda, born May 11, 1850, resides in Defiance county; Lorenzo B., September 8, 1851, resides in Antwerp, Paulding county; Mary E., October 4, 1853, resides in Paulding county; Martha A., January 8, 1858, resides in Paulding county; Flora E., July 15, 1860, resides in Paulding county; Emma A., born April 13, 1864, and Effie, born December 1, 1865, reside at home. Mr. Ely was elected County Surveyor in 1851 and served fourteen years; was Justice of the Peace from 1858. There were but a few settlers in the township when he came; it was almost an unbroken wilderness; white men were scarce. Mr. Ely is a farmer and surveyor in Carryall township.
